In funding terms, the most likely areas of productive engagement with the federal government are considered to be: children, early learning and a literate Australia; encouraging the digital economy and digital citizenship; social inclusion and community partnerships; and services related to health and ageing. Manuscript received October 2009. This is an invited paper presenting the ALIA President's views on the recent Public Libraries Summit.
